In addition to computer-aided calculations, the classic engineering design of flow and thermodynamic processes still plays an important role. This always begins on a sheet of paper with an assessment of the relevant influencing factors and forces and - if it is a development task - with a comprehensive literature search.

In some cases, design procedures in standard works such as the VDI Heat Atlas can be used. If a purely analytical design is not possible, in addition to computer experiments, the classic model test still represents a possibility for analyzing a thermodynamic process or a flow phenomenon. But here too, classic engineering knowledge in the form of model laws is required in order to design experiments correctly.
